Our History
The Whitty Bar – A Rich History with a Modern Twist
The Whitty Bar, formerly known as Axminster Conservative Club, carries a proud history that dates back to the early 1890s. Originally enrolled as member number 247 of the Association of Conservative Clubs (ACC) upon its formation in 1894, the club has been a cornerstone of the Axminster community for well over a century. The ACC remains the largest association of political clubs, with an estimated 1,100 clubs across the UK today.
Over the years, the club has evolved while maintaining its historic roots. The Whitty Bar resides in part of the old Axminster Carpet Factory, acquired in 1912, and expanded further in the 1950s with the purchase of the adjacent Registry Office. These additions created space for a storeroom, a secondary bar in the function room upstairs, and eventually a rear extension in the 1970s to accommodate a full-sized snooker table and updated lounge areas.
A major refit in 1985 introduced new carpets, ceilings, furniture, and a reconfigured bar area with a small kitchen. The venue underwent a complete refurbishment in 2017, modernising facilities to include an extended kitchen, updated toilets, and a reimagined lounge area with a small stage for events, a darts and pool area, and space for fruit machines and TVs.
Now rebranded as The Whitty Bar, this Grade II listed building remains a vital part of Axminster’s heritage while embracing modern technology and inclusivity. Open to the public while offering membership benefits such as discounted drinks, The Whitty Bar is a welcoming hub for everyone. We take pride in preserving the historic charm of the building while creating a vibrant space for the community to enjoy.
